Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why is SLAS2020 cancelled?
A: Quite a number of travel restrictions and bans have been imposed over the past few days by different universities across Europe and the Americas, many of them lasting at least until the end of April. Given that the majority of our participants are travelling in from such countries, our prospective programme would be much reduced without their participation. While we were initially thinking of videoconferencing, there would now be a likely imbalance between online and physical participants, making many panels difficult to host and we would have also confronted the significant challenge of transforming a face-to-face event into a largely videoconference event, at relatively short notice. Additionally, the number of cases reported in the Netherlands is on the increase and it is quite possible that universities here will begin taking measures soon. The situation becomes more complex daily and is rapidly changing. In these circumstances, the SLAS 2020 conference committee and the SLAS committee not only need to bear in mind the practicalities of running the conference, but also delegates’ health and safety and the health and safety of those around them.
Q: Will my conference registration fee will be refunded?
A: your conference registration fees will be refunded, and we are working hard to begin this process. Please be aware that this process is quite complex, and may take some weeks, so we ask you to bear with us as we make arrangements for refunds. We will get back to you as soon as possible with more details on this process, at the latest by 1 April.
Q: How about reimbursement for travel and/or accommodation?
A: individual travel and accommodation is not booked through us. If you have already booked and paid for your travel, and/or your accommodation, you should be able to claim reimbursement for this through either your institutional travel insurance, or your personal travel insurance. Please check the email that you received on 12 March 2020 about the conference cancelation, and the attached generic letter on SLAS-headed paper stating that the conference is cancelled. If you require a personalised letter (i.e. made out in your name), please email SLAS Secretary, Eamon McCarthy (Eamon.McCarthy@glasgow.ac.uk) and he will provide you with one. He can also help with other questions about practicalities that you may have.
Q: Will SLAS2021 be in Amsterdam?
A: We will discuss with the SLAS Committee what this situation means for the location of the SLAS2021 conference. We will be in touch again with further details on this matter once a decision has been taken.
